Remembering Those

February 1, 2010

Not a Good Look

Today marks many things. Today marks the first day in my month long alcohol strike. Today marks the first day of Black History Month. I’m sure you have some kind of weird looking face. I have a few reasons as to why I’m going on this strike. The first being that I want to honor our Black heroes. What better time to do it then now? The second is that I don’t want to end up like my parents. The third is that I want to honor those who suffer in the hands of alcoholics. Many people forgot about these people. The fourth is that I don’t want to depend on alcohol to make me feel better.

Don’t get me wrong; I don’t drink on the regular. I even have a rule where I wouldn’t drink on Sundays because I preserve that day for the Lord. I don’t even work on that day for that reason. I did break it one time last night just to get ready for this strike. This strike is going to be hard considering the things I plan on doing this month, but hey my birthday fell on a Sunday. I went out with some friends and everyone drank except for me. I felt so proud. The bigger goal of this is that I just want to make some positive changes in my life. I had some great and horrible moments while under the influence. I really don’t care about the good feeling I get. I just hope that one day I will never have a drink.

So remember the Black heroes who have made living a little easier for all of us. Don’t take things for granted. Try to learn some history this month. Attend a lecture or google something. Keep those who suffer in the hands of alcoholics in your prayers. Peace be on to all of you, my brothers and sisters.
